Mr. Pashkin (presenter) reviewed the New York State Portrait of a Graduate the board earlier adopted at the state level and explained what it will mean for Bayshore. He described the portrait's six focal attributes (academically prepared; creative innovator; critical thinker; effective communicator; global citizen; reflective and future-focused) and said the state's guidance and rubrics will be released to districts to support local implementation.
Pashkin told the board the changes will be phased. Districts finalized the portrait last year; phase 1 begins with new credit requirements and curriculum adjustments, phase 2 (2027-2029) will transition cohorts toward a single diploma, and the cohort entering 9th grade in 2029 will see full implementation. "These changes do not change the current graduation requirements," Pashkin said, noting the Regents remain an available option while new pathways are phased in.
Board members pressed for clarity about the state's "green check" for support networks and asked how families and counselors will be supported. The district plans targeted communications (webinar links, open-house sessions and pre-open-house briefings for secondary families), and staff said they will continue to gather feedback through the state's public feedback channels as rubrics and guidance are published.
Presenters and trustees agreed the shift offers student flexibility but raises implementation complexity for guidance counselors and administrators; the district will prioritize professional development, family outreach and regular updates to the board as state guidance becomes available.
