Bay Shore board hears that first day ran smoothly; device ban appears to increase student interaction

David Burdi, a district staff member who visited classrooms, said he saw immediate behavioral changes consistent with the new bell-to-bell ban on personal electronic devices. "The first day I actually believe went pretty smoothly... My classes alone, I didn't see a single phone the first day at all," Burdi said. He added that students "were talking more," particularly during lunch periods.
The board discussed small, informal ways to encourage positive social interaction during unstructured time, including games or small tables in cafeterias and time-out rooms. Board members and staff emphasized that routines still require adjustment and that bus routing and family communications will remain priorities in the opening weeks.
District presenters said the device policy implementation will be monitored and that staff feedback will inform any tweaks; parents will be offered information sessions and links to state guidance as details on curricular changes and supports are released.
