Commission approves conditional use for self‑storage on Highway 301 with paving condition

Nicholas (Nick) McCall, filling in as agent, said the parcel is zoned for highway‑commercial uses but requested removal of a staff‑recommended paving condition because converting gravel to asphalt would increase stormwater runoff and enlarge the detention pond.
County staff and the fire department explained that paved surfaces are preferred for emergency vehicle access and that the condition was included to ensure reliable fire response. McCall said the project could enlarge the drive to meet access standards while noting constraints around the detention area.
Commissioners amended the staff conditions to clarify the paving requirement toward Highway 301 and to tie the design to fire‑department access. With that amendment the commission voted unanimously to recommend approval of the conditional use to the county commissioners under the listed conditions.
