The Fredericksburg City Council voted Aug. 5 to adopt Ordinance 2524, creating a school speed zone of 30 miles per hour on Friendship Lane during peak school periods. Staff described the zone as running from just west of the Post Oak Road access near the middle school east to South Adam Street, completing speed‑reduction coverage around schools in that area.
Evan (public‑works staff) explained that the measure reduces the posted 40 mph limit to 30 during designated morning and afternoon school times; temporary signage will be posted the week after adoption and flashing, solar‑powered LED school signs will be installed when materials arrive in September. Council members raised questions about consistency with other 30‑mph school zones on Highway 16 and noted coordination with TxDOT would be necessary if the zone were extended along the 16 corridor.
A council member moved to adopt the ordinance; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Citizen Mark Cornett spoke in favor and urged future consideration of consistent arterial speed limits in and near the city.
Staff said the city will post temporary signage immediately and install the permanent flashing signs once equipment and materials arrive; TxDOT will be consulted regarding any changes on state‑maintained segments.
