Leah Berg, a senior community health specialist in the Department of Public Health and Environment, presented a resolution to the Washington County Board on Aug. 12 recognizing August 2025 as Minnesota Breastfeeding Month and describing county efforts to support lactation.
Berg outlined services including individual prenatal and postpartum lactation education, seven certified lactation specialists and one internationally board-certified lactation consultant available through county programs; WIC and Family Health Nursing teams that provide in-home and clinic-based consultation; and SHIP-funded efforts that helped create lactation spaces and loan a nursing mother's tent for community events. She also described local projects to enhance lactation-friendly spaces at community childcare centers.
Commissioner Cox moved to adopt the resolution and Commissioner Claussen seconded. The board approved the measure on roll call with all five commissioners voting aye.
Berg offered to follow up with staff to provide specific counts where requested (for example, the number of home visits per mother), and commissioners used the discussion to highlight the role of WIC and home visiting in supporting breastfeeding and maternal health.
