The Vermillion City Council on Nov. 3 approved a modest increase to curbside recycling fees intended to shore up a lean program fund.
City staff said the program, established in 2009, relies on two revenue sources: a fee collected through utility bills and proceeds from sale of recyclable materials. Staff said the fund is tight and proposed raising the residential monthly collection fee by $0.10 (from $3.90 to $4.00) and increasing commercial collection fees from $12.50 to $13.00.
"That increase, for a full year might bring in just about $3,400," a staff presenter said, adding the change would apply to billings after Jan. 1, 2026 (bills due no later than Feb. 10, 2026 would reflect the increase if approved).
With no public comment, the council voted to adopt the resolution to adjust curbside recycling collection fees. Staff said the residential fee increase is intended to modestly improve the fund balance and avoid larger increases in the near term.
Councilors did not indicate plans for further program changes at this meeting. The city will implement the higher fee on utility bills beginning with January 2026 billings, if approved.
