Red Hook creates Public Spaces Committee and discusses chamber lease for visitor info booth

The Village of Red Hook board voted to establish a Public Spaces Committee to advise the board on enhancing and preserving public green space, promote pollinator initiatives and recommend approaches to incorporate art into public spaces.

The committee will be mayor-appointed and board-approved, must be majority village residents, and will have between three and 10 members serving two-year terms. The resolution — discussed at length — emphasizes advising the board on the Pollinator Pathway project and public green-space maintenance, including Richard M Abrahams Memorial Park.

Separately, trustees reviewed a proposed six-month agreement with the Red Hook Chamber of Commerce to manage the village info booth. Board members discussed the booth’s ownership history (village-owned since a prior easement was not transferred), past break-ins and an offer from Sarah Jane of Shopgirl and a small group to lock/unlock and spruce the interior. Key proposed terms: village named as insured on the Chamber’s insurance; removable panels for any artwork so walls can be repainted; chamber responsibility for interior fixtures and locking; village responsibility for exterior and utilities; and either party may cancel the six-month arrangement.

The board asked the village attorney to draft a formal agreement reflecting these points and to advise whether in-kind work by the chamber would constitute a gift that needs valuation and acceptance.
