Red Hook authorizes Laughing Fox Farm to haul food scraps for village compost pilot

The Village of Red Hook board authorized the mayor to sign a contract with Laughing Fox Farm LLC for food-scrap pickup service for the village’s compost pilot program.
Board members said the county grant that funds the pilot pays for infrastructure — a shed, countertop bins and outreach materials — but explicitly does not cover the cost of hauling. The person taking over hauling, Ray Silverman of Laughing Fox Farm, has been performing the pickup for the town and signed the contract for the village.
The board approved an at-will contract that includes a 30-day cancellation minimum to allow renegotiation if the operator of the town service changes. The chair said the service arrangements should remain consistent with the town’s contract and that the village would renegotiate if the town’s contract terms change.
A trustee confirmed the pilot term is either 18 months or two years depending on grant timelines and added the grant’s timeline requires operations to begin within about 18 months of the award. The board voted in favor by voice.
