Summit County approves five-year Axon contract for body cameras and tasers, citing cost savings and integrated activation

Summit County's Public Safety Committee approved a five-year purchase contract with Axon Enterprise Inc. for body-worn cameras, Tasers, related supplies, warranty and software in a combined package not to exceed $2,470,336.23.

Angela Just of the Summit County Sheriff's Office outlined the request and introduced Deputy Chase Rose and Axon staff in the room. Axon representatives said signing the contract in 2025 rather than waiting for a later renewal year yields substantial savings — approximately $400,000 compared with signing in 2026 and roughly $600,000 compared with signing in 2027 when the county's current contract ends.

Axon representative Michael Griffiths described the integrated ecosystem for cameras and less-lethal devices, saying Axon (which owns the Taser brand) is the single provider able to sync devices so that activating a Taser can automatically trigger nearby body cameras to record critical incidents. "Anytime a taser is activated, the body camera turns on," Griffiths said, and the agency can set buffer periods (e.g., 30 seconds prior to an activation).

Council members asked about bundling and whether competitors offer similar integrated products; Axon staff said the company's ecosystem provides that single-vendor integration. The motion carried by voice vote.

The committee also approved a one-year renewal with Aramark Correctional Services for jail food services (12/01/2025–11/30/2026) in an amount not to exceed $980,000; county staff said Aramark serves an average of about 12,000 meals weekly for roughly 600 inmates and plans minor menu enhancements at roughly $0.20 extra per meal.
