Alan Verlander of Airstream Ventures told the Tourist Development Council that the county has secured or is pursuing a lengthy list of sports events — youth football championships, lacrosse tournaments, cross-country meets, the minor-league golf tour and potential camps for Premier Lacrosse League and USA Pickleball. He said the county is in advanced discussions with NCAA regional selectors and other national event organizers.
Verlander said operational issues (field netting, temporary goals, parking and exhibit-hall capacity) have limited some event capacity in the past but that temporary solutions and planned capital work will allow the county to host more events. He told the board the program’s contract goal is "10 events, 3,000 hotel nights, $2,000,000" but acknowledged only one event had been contracted at the time of the presentation and that bookings would accelerate in coming months.
Board members and staff discussed tactics to capture lodging nights: staff will provide organizers with hotel contact lists, meet teams at hotels or the sports complex to confirm room blocks, and station staff at registration to record where coaches and teams stay. The TDC approved grants for several sports events later in the meeting and emphasized post-event reporting for heads-and-beds verification.
