Board defers vote on SRO contract; seeks revised APD agreement and more details

At the work session the board flagged the proposed contract for School Resource Officers with the Asheville Police Department for further review rather than placing it on the consent agenda.
Chair Sarah explained the revised APD contract included formatting and term corrections but noted the contract is time-sensitive. "Knowing this particular contract has some time sensitivity, this is approving our SROs," she said, and invited questions before scheduling the vote.
Board members raised operational details. One board member noted the contract requires the contractor to provide five SROs but the district has only had four on staff recently because of APD availability; staff said they only pay for officers actually assigned and that APD is working toward restoring the fifth position in January. "We only pay for what we get," said an APD liaison.
Pepe asked for flexibility in the number of officers and for clarity on what the district would be billed for. Superintendent Maggie and staff agreed to circulate the updated contract once the corrected version is posted and to be prepared to discuss outstanding questions at the next regular meeting rather than approving the item on consent.
The board's action: the APD contract was not placed on the consent agenda and will return for additional review when the revised contract is available.
