Summary
The Everett School Committee on Nov. 3 unanimously accepted multiple federal Title grants (Title I, II, III, IV) and three local gifts, approving use for instructional programs, English-learner services and enrichment; totals announced include $2.57M (Title I stated) and smaller Title allocations plus $70,000 in local support.
The Everett School Committee unanimously approved acceptance of multiple federal grants and local donations at its Nov. 3 meeting, enabling ongoing supports for instruction, professional development, English learners and enrichment programs.
Superintendent Hart asked the committee to take “favorable action” to accept Title grants for fiscal 2026 and related donations. The agenda listed a Title I award to the district (superintendent stated $2,573,555; the roll-call entry recorded $22,573,555), a Title II allotment of $253,956 to support staff professional development, a Title III award of $450,878 for English learners, and a Title IV grant of $184,243 for equitable programming. Each motion to accept the grants passed by roll call 10–0.
Hart said the Title funds are annual entitlements from the federal government and that the district will use them for the purposes named in the federal programs. “This is one of several title grants that we receive from the federal government,” he said, asking for favorable acceptance to access the funds for fiscal 2026.
Committee members asked no substantive follow-up questions on the grants during the votes. The committee also accepted three local gifts: a $60,000 donation from the Murray Bernstein Charitable Trust to expand summer music enrichment and scholarships; a $10,000 grant from the Everett Citizens Foundation to launch a Next Level Learning Lab after-school program intended to serve about 40 students ages 5–21; and a $4,000 donation from Everett Fire Department Local 143 to support band, arts and the history club. Each of those motions passed unanimously.
Hart acknowledged deputy superintendent Gretchen Manning for cultivating some philanthropic support and Mayor DeMaria described the Everett Citizens Foundation as funded in part by the city’s host-community agreement with Wynn Resorts, noting the city cycles grant rounds quarterly.
What happens next: the district will accept the grants and donations into its fiscal 2026 accounts and proceed with program planning consistent with each funding source’s allowable uses. The committee did not set any conditions on the acceptances at the meeting.
Clarification: the superintendent verbally referenced a Title I amount of $2,573,555; the motion and roll-call transcript entry recorded the Title I acceptance as $22,573,555. The committee’s vote accepted whatever amount was entered in the motion and roll call; the district should clarify which figure is correct in the official acceptance paperwork.
