Pike County schedules household hazardous waste collection Nov. 8; $30 per car, register on Eventbrite

Pike County officials announced a household hazardous waste collection event for Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shovel Elementary School intended for county property owners.

Mike Brzezinski, who presented details to the commissioners, said the event requires registration through Eventbrite and carries a $30 per-car fee. He said the event is for residential property owners only (no businesses) and has no strict limits on quantities so long as materials fit in a vehicle; he cautioned that very large items such as tractor-trailers are not practical.

A chemist and trained vendor will be on-site to identify and handle materials. Accepted items listed include gas cans and old gasoline (with return of containers upon request), car batteries and lithium batteries (not household alkaline batteries), pressurized canisters and aerosols, fire extinguishers and propane tanks. Brzezinski said the event will operate rain or shine and that the county asks residents to remain in their cars for safety while vendors unload materials.

The program is funded in part through a state DEP household hazardous waste grant that covers pesticide disposal at no cost to the county this year; Brzezinski said the county participated in its first household hazardous waste event in 2022 and learned operational lessons for this year’s arrangement.

Residents with registration issues who cannot pay online were invited to contact the county office to arrange a slot in person. The county encouraged residents to consult the published information sheet for a list of acceptable items before attending.
