Board to refine response to Haven Park owners after residents raise rent and tax concerns

Johnson County supervisors reviewed a draft response to Haven Park Community owners regarding residents’ complaints about rent increases and the owners’ public statements. In the Aug. 20 work session, members criticized the owners for taking credit for county actions and for conflating assessed valuation changes with increased taxes actually paid by residents.

Supervisor discussion requested that the county treasurer’s office verify figures in a table prepared by the Johnson County Affordable Housing Coalition (Jessica Andino), which the board said that they would circulate to the treasurer for confirmation. Supervisors asked staff to clarify dates and to indicate in the response that the county is amplifying residents’ concerns rather than asserting county-code violations where none have been established.

Board members asked that staff propose a revised deadline for responses rather than request one from the owners, to more clearly represent resident demands, and to circulate the updated letter for formal consideration at the next meeting. The board also discussed verifying class-of-taxation changes and requested minor edits before finalizing the correspondence.
