The East Greenwich Town Council on Tuesday approved a contract with Catalyst to add a property‑fraud alert module to the town’s land‑records system, a service that allows property owners to register and receive notice when a record is filed matching a registered name.
Town Clerk Lee Carney, who led the project work, said the module will verify recorded documents against subscriber data and send alerts so owners can review potentially unauthorized filings. The implementation and initial annual maintenance will cost $9,720 with ongoing annual maintenance of $730; the town expects the module to be implemented in approximately 45 days after the sales agreement is executed.
Carney cited national and regional FBI statistics showing a rising number of real‑estate fraud complaints and losses and said the module will provide additional protection, particularly for vulnerable owners such as seniors and owners of vacant properties. "It's on the rise," she said of real‑estate fraud in the region.
Council approved the contract 5–0; funding will come from the document preservation and technology upgrade fund, which collects 10% of the recording fees in the town clerk’s office.
Clerk Carney said residents will be able to register and manage subscriptions once the system is active.
