A proposed Sanford Poet Laureate program drew broad interest from commissioners Monday but also raised timing and staffing questions.
Public art staff presented a framework modeled on Orlando’s program that would appoint an annual poet laureate to serve as a literary ambassador, deliver three original poems per year, and lead four public poetry activities (one in each commission district). The presentation proposed a $2,500 annual stipend paid from the Public Art Commission budget and a timeline that would begin program activities in spring 2026.
“Poetry connects us, bridges differences, and reminds us that government, community, and culture are all working together to make lives better for all,” the presenter said, outlining the program’s goals of literacy, community engagement and cultural programming.
Several commissioners supported the concept but expressed concern about timing and communications capacity, arguing the city should ensure its communications office and event staffing can support the program rollout. One commissioner asked that eligibility not be so restrictive that only a narrow pool of published poets would qualify; staff agreed to revisit the eligibility and timeline and suggested returning to the commission with revisions at the second January meeting.
No ordinance or funding change was approved Monday. Staff will refine the program timeline, reconsider eligibility criteria (including recognition/award requirements), and return with a revised proposal and recommended rollout schedule.
