NCDOT updates: winter prep, completed resurfacing and speed-limit review on NC 24

CLINTON, N.C. — NCDOT staff briefed Sampson County commissioners on routine and upcoming road projects, winter preparedness and a pending speed-limit review.
Lance (NCDOT) said the county’s maintenance yard added a new salt shelter with capacity for 2,500 tons of salt to aid snow and ice operations. Staff reported the county’s fleet of snow trucks increased from seven to 13 units capable of plowing and salting.
A second NCDOT representative outlined resurfacing and paving work the department recently completed on approximately 25 miles, listing roads such as Goshen Church Road, NC 55 between Johnson County and the county line, and various town street segments. The department also described upcoming chip-seal preservation contracts and night paving on busy commercial corridors to reduce business disruption.
NCDOT said it has submitted a speed-limit review for its section of NC 24 to the regional traffic group and the Board of Transportation for approval; the county is also collaborating with Sampson County Schools on reduced-speed signing and flashers at Union Intermediate and Union High School.
Commissioners thanked staff for the work and raised coordination concerns about paving timing and town water infrastructure projects that may affect recently paved segments.
