Waynesville’s town council voted to approve an agreement giving funds to Mountaineer Little League to restore the Dutch Fisher Athletic Field and return it to active use.
Town attorney and staff outlined the contract’s key conditions: Mountaineer Little League must make certain financial records available under General Statute 55A-16-24 so the town can review stewardship of public funds; funds from a Dick’s Sporting Goods grant must be used expressly for the field; and, after construction, the town’s recreation department will assume routine maintenance tasks such as mowing, fence repairs and restroom upkeep. Councilmembers and league volunteers said the work will help keep youth baseball and softball local and provide broader community benefits. The contract sets a completion deadline of June 30, 2026.
The agreement was presented as a public–private collaboration. Staff said the league has already lined up some donations and project grants to supplement the town contribution. Councilmember discussion noted the team expects to finish well ahead of the contract deadline and emphasized the importance of timely construction given earlier FEMA delays with other projects.
The mayor closed the item with a blessing to begin work and council approved the motion by voice vote. Staff indicated the league may begin site work immediately once the contract is executed and paperwork is completed.
