Myakka River Elementary named Everglades Champion School for 2024–25

The Everglades Foundation and Charlotte County Public Schools recognized Myakka River Elementary as an Everglades Champion School for the 2024–25 school year during the Nov. 11 board meeting.
Andy Green of the Everglades Foundation described the Everglades literacy program’s goals: professional development for teachers, curriculum integration, interdisciplinary projects and field experiences to promote long-term stewardship of the Everglades and local ecosystems. Green said the designation reflects a schoolwide commitment to environmental education.
Lead champion teacher Carrie Gilmore told the board the school uses its Southwest Florida location to give students hands-on learning opportunities — visits to beaches, hikes and field-based science instruction — that help students understand conservation and stewardship.
The board and superintendent congratulated Myakka River Elementary and posed for a photo with the school banner following the recognition.
