The Stevens Point Area Public School District board approved a package of educational program items at its Nov. 10 meeting including course name changes, new course sequencing to reduce duplication, concurrent enrollment options and approval of district-sponsored field trips.
Ed Services staff recommended renaming the junior-high visual design course to "Digital Art" to improve clarity for parents and students, and restructuring the introductory science sequence into grade‑targeted courses (8 Science 8 and 8 Science 9) to avoid repeated content across eighth and ninth grades. Jeff (Ed Services) said the changes are intended to align standards and reduce overlap.
At the high school level, SPASH requested permission to partner with Mid State Technical College on an associate‑degree pathway in business that would hinge on offering Intro to Business and Microsoft Office as transcripted courses. SPASH also proposed a concurrent Educational Psychology course with UWSP; administration noted the UWSP concurrent enrollment fee (cited as $115) and that concurrent enrollment carries an additional student fee if students opt for university credit.
John Bollinger (SPASH) described program benefits: "To make that happen, we need your permission to offer Intro to Business and Microsoft Office," he said, explaining the ability for students to earn college credits or an associate pathway via partner institutions.
The board discussed staffing, materials and monitoring enrollment; one board member abstained on the UWSP item because of a UWSP affiliation disclosed in the meeting record.
Services committee matters: the board appointed Miguel Campos as a citizen member of the Educational Services Committee after committee interviews; board minutes record the final vote as 6–2 with Mercer, Liebrecht and Potter Nelson recorded as dissenting earlier in the tally. The board also approved district-sponsored national and international field trips after administrative review of vendor contracts, cancellation and pandemic‑related refund provisions.
Next steps: the administration will place approved courses in the course guide, monitor enrollments and return to the board if additional staffing is required to sustain new sections or pathways.
