District curriculum staff presented proposed updates to the high school and middle school program of studies for the 2026–27 school year and explained how the changes support course sequencing, career readiness and state PPE requirements.
Proposed updates included renaming some courses (for example, Piano → Intro to Piano; Nonacademic Algebra → Academic Algebra), adding honors options (German 3 and 4), and several tech‑education adjustments (Advanced Media Production expanded to include cinematography and journalism; Filmmaking updated to emphasize cinematography). New course offerings include an introductory NJROTC elective titled 'Introduction to Citizenship Development' designed to let students sample naval science without committing to the year‑long program, Naval Science 5 for students continuing beyond level 4, and a select orchestra by audition.
Administrators also raised a district implementation plan for a mandatory personal finance semester course for juniors to meet PPE mandates. They said the course will count as a 0.5 credit and that counselors would work to fit it into schedules; a virtual option will be available when in‑person scheduling creates conflicts (for GIEP students or students enrolled in compact vocational schedules such as VCTC). The board was told the program-of-studies proposals will be brought for formal approval at the next legislative meeting.
Board members asked about language offerings, instructor certification constraints, middle school math options and NCAA eligibility for renamed algebra offerings; staff said staffing/certification drive what languages can be offered and confirmed supports for struggling middle‑school students (intervention periods and tenth‑period math camps).
Administration said they will post the full program‑of‑studies document and bring the formal recommendation to the legislative meeting for approval.
