Superintendent Jennifer Green told the board the district has revised its swing-space plan for University K–12 after engineering and permitting reviews showed the O House building would require extensive fire‑suppression work that could not be completed in time and would carry high community disruption.
Green said city, county and state approvals would be needed to drill and connect to a water main across major roads; that construction would require closing county roads and returning them to their prior state at the district’s expense. Because those steps threatened to push work beyond the district’s occupancy timeline, the district ruled O House nonviable for the high‑school swing space and will place University K–12 grades 9–12 at the Southfield Regional Academic Center during the new build. Elementary and middle grades will move to Vandenberg and Eisenhower respectively.
Green said the board had previously approved a $1,500,000 allocation tied to code upgrades and that the district is exploring whether tapping a recently installed water main near a new fire tower would offer a less disruptive, lower‑cost option. She urged the board to form a construction committee and requested trustees receive iteration reviews from the architect so the board can confirm design changes during the build process.
The board emphasized safety and community impact as priorities; trustees asked for representation at construction meetings and for the district to provide parent communications as decisions are finalized.
