Elko County backs increased grazing on public lands and sends letter supporting BLM gather

The Elko County Commission on Oct. 15 approved a resolution urging federal authorities to increase grazing opportunity on public lands and also voted to send a letter of support to the Bureau of Land Management for recent Antelope and Triple B wild‑horse gather operations.

A commissioner who sponsored the resolution said prior presentations and research (including work shared with the Gwen Center) show grazing can be used to reduce woody encroachment and improve rangeland carrying capacity. "We just kinda stare at [the research] when he presents it, and we never really do anything," one commissioner said in urging action; another added that outcome‑based grazing could produce measurable results.

During debate, commissioners and public commenters described long‑term changes in range condition and wildlife populations, and emphasized that grazing is one tool for creating disturbance regimes that sustain grasses and reduce woody growth. Some commissioners voiced caution about praising BLM actions before outcomes are clear but ultimately supported sending a letter acknowledging the BLM’s gather effort.

Both the grazing resolution (2025‑35) and the BLM letter passed by voice vote.

What’s next: staff said the resolution and supporting materials will be transmitted to the appropriate federal offices and to the Gwen Center and other stakeholders as part of ongoing outreach.
