Elko County Board of Health approves minutes; chair warns of Medicare payment pause and requests state briefings on DHHS split and Medicaid changes

In opening remarks, the chair addressed resident concerns about a federal government shutdown and Medicare access, saying "I just want to make it very clear that it does not affect the patients" and that clinics and hospitals will continue to take people on Medicare. The chair also relayed a CMS announcement that, because of the shutdown, "from October 1 all the way to the end, Medicare will not be making payments to the hospitals or to the clinics in that time." No CMS or state official was present to confirm operational details during the meeting.
The chair asked to schedule presentations from the Nevada Association of Counties (NACO) or state representatives to explain the planned split of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services into a Nevada Health Authority and a Department of Human Services and to outline how Medicaid changes planned for fiscal year 2026 could affect rural Nevada. "We will get someone here from NACO or from the state to talk about the splitting of the DHHS...and how it affects rural Nevada," the chair said.
No public comments were offered either in person or online. The chair said several scheduled presenters were absent and said the board expects fuller participation at the January meeting, when the hospital will also present a complete third‑quarter quality scorecard.
The meeting concluded with brief board member remarks clarifying event names ("Ned the Needle" for Halloween and "Sensitive Santa" for the December event) and a thank-you to attendees.
