The presiding official told the Snellville City mayor and council on Oct. 27 that South Gwinnett High School’s band has been invited to participate in the Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade, and council members agreed to help publicize the band’s fundraising drive.
The presiding official read an email from the band director saying, “South has won the honor of participating in the Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade.” Council members discussed logistical options for a proclamation, including presenting it at an upcoming council meeting or traveling to the school to deliver it in person because the band will be leaving the Monday before Thanksgiving. The presiding official noted the Nov. 24 council meeting is close to the parade date and said the Nov. 10 meeting is the swearing-in, complicating timing for a formal presentation.
Council and staff members also said the band will need to raise money for travel and uniforms; the presiding official said the band “haven't actually had new uniforms since 2010.” Staff said they would draft a proclamation and collect contact information for the band booster club to circulate to council members and the community so business sponsorships and public outreach can support the trip.
No formal action was taken; staff will prepare the proclamation and return with contact and fundraising information at a future meeting.
