Village of Dalton honors veterans, first responders and community volunteers at recognition breakfast
At a community recognition breakfast held at the Dalton Park District, local officials and volunteers honored veterans, first responders, business vendors and elected leaders from Dalton and neighboring villages.

The program began when the emcee introduced Elder Edward Lawson for a presentation and asked attendees to give him a round of applause. The host said the awards and pins were intended to thank businesses and individuals who donated time, resources and money to make the event possible.

‘‘On behalf of the office of the chaplain, Mayor Jason House, the board of trustees, and office of the clerk, we proudly thank you, sir, for your service,’’ the event host said during the initial presentation. Local businesses named for surprise recognition included Abundant Christian Transportation, Airline Towing, Angelo’s Barber Shop, Baldwin Daycare, Buyer’s Market, Calumet Bakery and others; Dalton Firemen IAFF Local 3766 and a number of food vendors also received awards.

Organizers singled out civic leaders and agency presidents: Louise Copeland, president of the Dalton Library board; Cleo Jones, president of the Dalton Park District; Will Tillman, president of Dalton School District 149’s board; Commissioner Sandra Wells of the Dalton Park District; Illinois State Senator Willie Preston; and Illinois State Representative Will Davis. The host invited Mayor Jason House for a photo opportunity and thanked visiting officials, including Mayor Pope of the Village of Burnham.

Chaplain Minister White led a segment of the program honoring police officers and firefighters and read a list of veteran residents who will receive certificates and care bags. ‘‘My vision for the chaplain’s office is to make sure that our village is covered in prayer consistently,’’ Minister White said, describing plans to assemble a team to visit police, fire, village hall and public works to offer pastoral support. She also said she will personally deliver certificates and gift bags to veterans in senior living and nursing-care facilities.

The event included a musical tribute by Andrea Miller, who dedicated her performance to veterans and first responders. Miller led the audience in a gospel rendition of ‘‘The Lord is my Shepherd’’ before the chaplain closed the program with a blessing and the host announced a community raffle and thanked volunteers.

Program materials and remarks did not include formal motions, votes, ordinances or budget actions. Organizers said remaining certificates and pins would be distributed to honorees who were not present. The event concluded with photo opportunities, a raffle announcement and volunteer acknowledgements.
