Akron City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve a conditional use allowing Cleveland Clinic Akron General to place three freestanding signs within setback areas at 676 South Broadway.
City planner Mike Antonucci told council that the hospital seeks "3 destination ground signs within the setback," including a main identification sign one foot from the right of way measuring 4 feet by 8 feet with internal illumination and two directional signs of 18 and 10 square feet. Antonucci said planning staff and the planning commission recommend approval subject to conditions, noting the property’s large building setback and wide right of way make typical signage less visible.
Tom Yankovich of Ellet Sign Company, representing the petitioner, testified the site has three frontages and entrances and that the proposed sign placements are conservative and would aid emergency and first‑time patients in locating services.
With no other public testimony, council pulled the committee for a favorable report and moved to passage. Clerk Viviano recorded a roll‑call vote showing the ordinance passed 9 to 0.
The ordinance authorizes the conditional use as described by staff; the adopted measure was advertised in the Akron Beacon Journal and had been posted on the City Council website prior to the hearing.
