San Diego Job Corps center reopens; Imperial Beach urged to help recruit students

Reyna Delgadillo, director of the San Diego Job Corps center, told the council the national Job Corps program recently experienced a brief nationwide funding disruption but the San Diego center has reopened and is admitting students.
Delgadillo said the center is contracted for 555 students, but after the shutdown the on-site population fell; currently 166 students remain on site and the program is seeking assistance from local partners and the city to recruit new enrollees. Jennifer Gaines, director of admissions, described eligibility (residents of San Diego and Imperial counties, ages 16–24, low-income) and outreach steps including weekly on-site tours and rolling admissions.
Councilmembers commended the program and asked about staff retention and trade availability; Delgadillo said many trades remain open and that the center offers housing, three meals a day and career-transition services at no cost to students. Staff and the council encouraged the community to share Job Corps contact information to increase enrollment.
