Summary
WK Prep will move into four rooms in Battle Creek Central's music wing with a separate student entrance; district staff described staffing, social studies push‑in support, remote‑learning options and an open house before school starts.
WK Prep staff told the board that the program will operate out of four rooms in the music wing of Battle Creek Central High School beginning this school year.
‘‘WK is now located in four of the rooms inside the music wing of Battle Creek Central. Students will use Door 24 to enter and exit so the WK students have their own enter and exit area,’’ said Carly Hawkins, dean at WK. She said classes and food service plans (breakfast in the Music Wing and lunch in the Battle Creek Central commons) will be in place before the district open house on Aug. 19.
Hawkins told trustees WK’s staff includes Kathy Basden, Ally Young, Carla Belyer and Mike Smith, with an expected in‑person daily population of about 90 students from an approximate total enrollment of 126. She said 16 students are designated “flex remote” and some students will remain fully remote; remote learners will have daily Google Meet hours for teacher support.
Trustees raised certification and student‑support questions. Hawkins said the district lacked a WK teacher certified in social studies, so Battle Creek Central will provide a social studies teacher who will spend three of four blocks teaching and use an additional hour of her planning time to support WK students. The board discussed counselor continuity; administrators said existing counselors who have known students will continue to travel with those students where appropriate, and the district’s student success team will review new enrollments.
Scheduling, supervision and transportation were discussed: dismissal timings and bus routes will remain aligned with central schedules to avoid changes to busing, and staff will provide adult supervision in arrival and dismissal areas.
No formal board action was taken. District staff said they will continue transition meetings with Central and WK and will collect family surveys after the start of school to inform adjustments.
