Walnut Elementary students introduce new student council to the board

Walnut Elementary students and teachers presented the school’s newly formed student council. Students described the council’s five focus areas, meeting cadence, a Patriot Day veterans project, a Penny Award fundraiser and a monthly newsletter to connect families.
During the Oct. 8 USD 253 Board of Education meeting, Walnut Elementary Principal Jamie Dakin introduced the school’s first student council and teacher co‑chair Katie Herdy escorted student leaders to present their work.
Student council president Avia Davis opened the presentation and other student leaders (vice president Nash Talay, secretary Sage Gutierrez and grade representatives) explained that the council organizes around five characteristics: leadership, diversity, academic achievement, school and community involvement, and school spirit. Students said the council meets twice a month (once in the morning and once after school) to brainstorm schoolwide service projects, fundraising and ways to boost school spirit.
Planned activities include a Penny Award fundraiser in which classes compete to collect pennies, a monthly newsletter to send home with students to inform families, and grade‑level projects for Patriot Day on Nov. 7 to honor veterans. Students also described plans to staff a booth at school events and parent‑teacher conferences to explain student council activities.
Board members praised the students’ presentation and asked if there were questions; presenters thanked the board for listening.
