Board approves $31,000 Keys to Literacy purchase to help educators meet literacy seal

On Oct. 8 the USD 253 Board of Education approved a $31,000 purchase of Keys to Literacy professional services and materials to support structured literacy training for district educators.
Dr. Paula Hauge presented the item and said the district report concerns a ‘seal of literacy’ that educators will be required to add to their licenses by July 1, 2028. She said Keys to Literacy was one of the options presented previously and that roughly 40 educators had earlier indicated interest in pursuing that pathway. Funding was described as a mix of co‑op contributions and at‑risk funds; administrators said the co‑op would cover a portion for participating educators.
“Like I said at the beginning, it’s one of the options that was brought forth last year,” Dr. Hauge said, noting prior groundwork and partnerships used in the recommendation.
Board member (Speaker 13) moved to approve purchase of Keys to Literacy professional services and materials for $31,000; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously, 7–0.
Administrators said they will resurvey interested educators after board approval and move forward with implementation for those who opt into the program.
