Alvin ISD teacher asks board to investigate alleged hiring retaliation after rescinded job offer

Tanya Jabbar, a former kindergarten teacher at Wilder Elementary, addressed the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees during open forum and asked the board to investigate what she described as retaliatory hiring practices after she filed a grievance alleging a hostile work environment.

"My grievance was based on a hostile work environment and harassment," Jabbar said, recounting that she filed a grievance that was later heard by district officials. She said she interviewed for an ELA/coaching position at Ronald McNair Junior High on April 28 and "approximately a week later" the offer was rescinded. "The offer was not rescinded because the position was filled," she said, adding that "reliable sources" had told her district human-resources staff and a named administrator discouraged principals from hiring her.

Jabbar also said she applied for other positions at Shirley Brothers Elementary and Nolan Ryan Junior High and did not receive follow-up, which she attributed to the same alleged interference. "What I'm currently experiencing is retaliation," she said, and asked the board for an investigation so she could regain the ability to seek employment with Alvin ISD.

Board President stopped public comment at the three‑minute limit and no district representative offered a response during the meeting. The board did not take action on Jabbar's request that evening; the president noted that public comment does not itself result in immediate board action but may be referred to the superintendent for review.

The allegations Jabbar raised—naming a campus principal and human-resources staff—were made in the public-comment portion of the meeting and were not disputed on the record at that time. The district did not provide a statement in the meeting transcript. Any investigation or personnel action would be handled under district procedures and state law governing personnel matters and grievances.
