Santa Maria adopts routine building‑code updates required by state; council records unanimous vote

Shannon Dow, director of community development, presented an ordinance to amend portions of the municipal code to adopt the trifecta of changes issued by the California Building Standards Commission. Dow characterized the 2025 cycle changes as procedural and minor—clarifying requirements for two‑way communication systems, stairwell and elevator references—and said all California cities are required to adopt the updates every three years.
No public comments were received during the hearing. Council moved and seconded adoption of the ordinance; the clerk called the roll and the motion carried unanimously.
Dow and the city’s fire marshal and building official were available for questions, and staff confirmed there were no significant substantive changes that evening.
