School committee considers formal operating principles; board members request onboarding, clearer public-communication language

Members praised the document as a strong start but raised multiple substantive points: add clear onboarding and mentoring for new members; condense repetitive or tactical language; clarify whether and when the chair may speak for the board and ensure public statements reflect board vote or policy; and consider a footnote on the "no surprises" expectation so members still may raise emergent issues.
"I think we maybe need to talk a little bit about onboarding or how this is presented and when it's presented," one member said, noting the steep learning curve for new committee members on topics such as Chapter 70 funding.
Committee members suggested the subcommittee condense and clarify sections, link some role descriptions to MASC guidance, and return with a revised draft. Rebecca said the subcommittee would incorporate edits and follow up; the record shows the motion was made and seconded for a first read, and committee discussion continued without a final approval vote on the document that evening.
The operating-principles discussion was procedural but substantive, emphasizing transparency, member conduct and public communication standards. The committee agreed to circulate workshop minutes from July and have the subcommittee return with a tightened document for additional review.
