Delta County commissioners send boardroom tech upgrade to finance committee after debate over cost and scope

Delta County commissioners discussed whether to upgrade boardroom technology to allow broader recording and streaming of county meetings and other public events, and voted to refer the matter to the finance committee.

Options discussed ranged from an inexpensive OWL audio recorder (audio-only, lower cost but requiring post-processing) to a more comprehensive system that would integrate table microphones, a mixer and video for live streaming. Staff provided rough cost estimates: about $6,000 for upgraded table microphones and mixers, roughly $15,000 for additional wired microphone arrays for the center room, and substantially more for a full live-stream integration. One commissioner described a quoted price for a full overhaul as “a $100,100,000 plus” (discussion context indicated this was an expression of perceived scale rather than a literal procurement figure).

Proponents argued that recording meetings and archiving them (audio or audio/video) would expand public access, allow remote attendance and preserve joint meetings (with cities and other partners). Others warned about significant costs, the need for a finance evaluation and that some meetings occur outside the current boardroom, reducing utilization if meetings remain elsewhere.

Board members discussed grant opportunities tied to the room’s role as the county Emergency Operations Center; administration said state and federal emergency programs can occasionally support EOC technology upgrades but availability and eligibility must be verified.

A motion to send the technology purchase and funding-source decision to the finance committee passed by voice vote; administration will work with finance to identify budget options, potential grants and procurement steps.
