Wausau committee approves public participation plan for 1300 Cleveland Avenue

The City of Wausau Economic Development Committee voted Nov. 4 to approve a public participation plan for 1300 Cleveland Avenue that will center neighborhood engagement on nonindustrial land‑use options consistent with current residential zoning.
Randy (city staff) told the committee the plan responds to direction from the prior meeting and is intended to identify a clear goal for the property so remediation work and developer outreach can align with an intended end use. "I think it's really important that we look at and determine what the goal of this public participation process is," Randy said, adding staff developed a generic process that includes meetings with the neighborhood group and returning findings to the committee.
Eric Lindman, public works director, said a DNR site investigation has been completed and that the next technical step is preparing the RAOR — the remediation/response plan — which must coincide with a defined end use. "When we put in an RAOR for the DNR, it's going to kinda coincide with what the end use of the property is," Lindman said, noting staff expect environmental consultants to present remediation options and budget estimates to the council in December.
Committee members emphasized early neighborhood meetings so residents can shape options rather than just react to a finished plan. Staff said the process will include roughly two neighborhood meetings and that the final public‑input findings and any recommended land‑use direction will return to committee and then to full council as the process advances.
A motion to approve the public participation process was made by Alder Neal and seconded; the committee voted in favor and approved the plan.
