Council approves multiple small grants for schools, parks and community events

During its Aug. 20 meeting the Hawaii County Council approved a sequence of small appropriations from contingency accounts to support community organizations and events across the island.
Resolutions adopted included: - Resolution 267-25: $2,500 grant to Hamakua Kohala Health for the Kohala Schools 'Tools for Success' program (backpacks and school supplies). - Resolution 268-25: $2,500 to Parks & Recreation to assist with the 2025 Hawaii International Futsal Cup (goals, scoreboard support). - Resolution 269-25: $2,000 to assist USA Volleyball Inc. with the Hawaii Island Labor Day Volleyball Classic. - Resolution 270-25: $3,800 for recreation equipment at Waikae Recreation Center. - Resolution 271-25: $5,000 to Friends of the Palace Theater for centennial events. - Resolution 272-25: $5,500 to Grassroots Community Development Group to weatherproof a donated skate ramp for Hilo Bayfront. - Resolution 273-25: $10,000 to Hawaii Environmental Restoration for native rainforest restoration and education at Keaauhana. - Resolution 274-25/275-25/276-25/277-25: Additional small grants supporting scoreboards, tournaments, Kona Town Night Market and the Hawaii Island All Nations Pow Wow.
Council members thanked event organizers and Parks & Rec staff; discussion included requests for clarity about whether funds were braided with other contributions and suggestions to verify that equipment purchased (scoreboards) is maintained countywide. All resolutions were approved by voice or roll-call votes, with most recorded as unanimous (9 ayes).
What happens next: Departments receiving grants (Parks & Recreation, Research & Development) will process payments and coordinate with recipients on expenditures and reporting as required by county practice.
