Shontay Avant elected chair and David Bradford elected vice chair of Shelby County Commission

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Shontay Avant as chair and Commissioner David C. Bradford Jr. as vice chair during its Aug. 11 session.
Nominations for chair (Item 17) followed Rule 35 procedures and included speeches and public supporters for multiple nominees. After a roll-call vote, Avant received nine votes to two for another candidate and was declared chair-elect. "I would like to take time over this next year to really work with this body to get done some of the things we prioritized," Avant said in her remarks when she accepted the nomination and later the gavel.
Commissioners later proceeded to elect a vice chair (Item 18) through successive rounds of nominations and votes. After multiple ballots and a suspension of rules to break a tie, Commissioner Bradford emerged as vice chair with a final reported tally of nine for Bradford and three for his opponent; the commission accepted the result by acclamation.
Both elections included public and union endorsements from community leaders and labor representatives who addressed the commission during the nomination process. The leadership changes were completed before the commission moved to several substantive ordinance and budget items.
