Chambers County adopts policy changes for Don McLeod Sports Complex rentals, prioritizes county teams

The Chambers County Commission Court on Oct. 14 approved several items related to operations and rental rates at the Don McLeod Sports Complex now that turf installation is complete.
Parks staff reported the turf installation passed a walk‑through but requires up to several weeks for sod to settle; they recommended staging field openings to allow turf recovery. To prioritize local teams, staff proposed keeping in‑county practice at $30 per two hours if at least 50% of a team roster is from Chambers County. Out‑of‑county teams would face higher practice fees, and tournament fees were proposed at $500 per field (including maintenance and lighting) for outside organizers, with reduced rates for Chambers County nonprofit fundraisers.
Staff said batting cages would be charged per lane, that on‑site staffing would be hired to enforce rules and manage opening/closing hours, and that roster verification would be performed by checking player addresses. Commissioners discussed wear and tear, roster verification logistics and seasonal scheduling; one commissioner said they would restrict rentals when county teams required fields.
A motion was made to approve the packet items (items 1, 3, 4 and 5) with one commissioner noting item 2 was being left off; the court voted in favor. Staff will finalize pricing, staffing and the rental‑policy documents before opening fields to wide public use.
