Beach City Park construction moves forward; private memorial adjacent to park planned

Chambers County Commissioners on Tuesday approved the award of a contract for the final component of Beach City Park and heard a public comment about a privately funded memorial that will sit adjacent to the new park.
Staff recommended awarding Tri County Construction a $268,001.92 contract for an asphalt parking lot and a granite walking trail that will connect the existing and new park areas. The court approved the award by voice vote.
Earlier in the meeting, Beach City resident Billy Collins described a privately funded memorial he plans to place on donated land adjacent to the park to honor his son, who Collins said was killed by a distracted driver. Collins said the 15-foot-by-20-foot memorial will feature black granite benches and a 6.5-foot monument incorporating the bicycle wheel from his son's racing bike, and he emphasized that no taxpayer funds will pay for the project.
"My son was struck and killed by a driver that was on his cell phone," Collins said while describing the memorial's intent to put a face to the consequence of distracted driving. He thanked the court for naming a roadway the Adrian Cawthon Memorial Highway and said the walking trails for the park should connect to the monument on private property.
The staff presentation on the park contract noted the parking lot, walking trail and restroom complete the park program and will tie into the Adrian Combs Memorial located on adjacent private property. Commissioners spoke in favor and approved the construction award.
