Lakewood High recognizes five National Merit semifinalists and a commended scholar

Lakewood High School honored five National Merit semifinalists and one commended scholar Nov. 3. Alessio Matera received special mention for a 36 ACT and selection as one of four bassoonists in the Ohio All-State Orchestra; students will pursue college plans and are eligible to continue in the National Merit competition.
Lakewood High School students were honored at the Lakewood Board of Education meeting Nov. 3 as five semifinalists and one commended scholar in the National Merit Scholarship competition.
Associate Principal Bridget Furstenberger said more than 1.3 million students entered the competition and semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. The district’s recognized semifinalists are Cora Barcelona, Zachary Carnivale, Alessio Matera, Adele Wensel and Cece Weitemeyer; Abby Peck was named a National Merit commended student for placing in the top 5 percent of PSAT participants.
Furstenberger noted semifinalists will continue in the competition with finalists to be named in the spring, and said over 7,500 scholarships will be awarded. The board acknowledged students individually; Alessio Matera received additional public praise for achieving a perfect 36 on the ACT and for being selected as one of four bassoonists in the Ohio All-State Orchestra.
Local officials presented senatorial and house citations. Nikki Antonio said she brought citations from the Ohio Senate and from the Ohio House via Representative Tristan Rader, who could not attend.
The board congratulated the students and encouraged families and the community to celebrate their achievements; certificates and photographs followed the recognition.
