Howard County locates 1976 courthouse time capsule; commissioners approve return and display

County maintenance staff found a bicentennial (1976) time capsule at the county museum and the board approved returning it to display in the courthouse and documenting its placement.
Maintenance supervisor Bill Stone told the commission that research and contacts with the county museum located a bicentennial-era time capsule originally dedicated July 4, 1976. Stone described following historical newspaper leads and locating the capsule in a third-floor closet at the museum.
"We found it... I realized at that time, I had actually stood on it working on a fan coil unit," Stone said. He asked permission to transport the capsule back to the courthouse, clean it and place it near the stairs, and later display it in the prosecutor's second-floor office. The commissioners approved the return and directed documentation of the capsule's permanent location.
The board emphasized the importance of documenting the capsule's new location to prevent it from being lost again.
