Mayor MacPhail opened the Aug. 11 Saco City Council meeting by recognizing the Thornton Academy Golden Trojans for winning the 2025 boys state lacrosse championship. The mayor read the roster, noted that Thornton ended Falmouths 28-game winning streak in the final and cited two players named to the Portland Press Herald all-state team.
"We would like to congratulate the 2025 Thornton Academy Boys State championship lacrosse team," MacPhail said as she read the roster and named coaches and award winners. The mayor added that the community is proud of the teams accomplishment.
Later in the meeting, the council presented a citizen-hero award to Tyler Johnson for actions on July 29 at 22 Cleveland Street. According to the council presentation, Johnson entered a smoke-filled home multiple times after a neighbor reported a fire, found and removed two children, then returned to rescue the childrens grandfather; the family dog also escaped during the rescue. The mayor read the citation on a plaque presented to Johnson, which said the award recognized "extraordinary courage and selflessness on 07/29/2025 when you entered a burning home at 22 Cleveland Street in Saco, Maine and rescued 2 children, your grandfather, and their family dog from danger."
Council members and staff praised Johnsons actions as life-saving. Chief Hamill participated in the presentation and the mayor said the city extends its heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the Saco Fire Department and first responders.
The recognitions were made at the start of the regular meeting and drew brief procedural recesses so the team could gather for photos. No formal council action was required for these presentations.
