County staff advised commissioners that construction of new commercial hangars at the St. Clair County Airport has displaced a temporary hangar that had been housing the sheriff's helicopters. Kyle, a county staff member, asked the commission to approve issuing a notice to vacate the current hangar at month-end and to authorize a temporary month-to-month lease for hangar storage at Talladega Municipal Airport.
"We were homeless," Kyle said, describing the temporary arrangements while the airport grows; he asked the commission to approve the short-term Talladega lease. Commissioners moved and approved issuing a notice to vacate and entering the $700-per-month month-to-month agreement with Talladega as an interim solution.
Kyle said staff will coordinate with the sheriff and expects to vacate the current hangar by the end of the month. Commissioners framed the relocation as temporary while the county and airport authorities work toward a permanent arrangement.
