Tavares renews school resource officer agreement with Lake County School Board

The Tavares City Council voted Aug. 20 to approve a contract with the Lake County School Board to continue providing a School Resource Officer (SRO) at Tavares Elementary for the upcoming year.
Police chief (speaker 11) told the council this is the eighth year of such an agreement. Under the contract, the school board pays for the employee during school hours; the officer remains available to the city’s police department when school is not in session. The staff presentation noted the fiscal arrangement means the city bills the school board for coverage rather than directly paying the officer’s salary and benefits from city funds.
Council discussed whether the city should expand SRO coverage to middle and high schools. Staff said expanding would require additional full-time officers and coordination with county jurisdictions because some students attend schools outside city limits. With those constraints noted, Councilmember (speaker 4) moved to approve the agreement and the motion passed.
