Resident invites commissioners to battery-storage briefing, stresses lithium-iron safety

Melissa Rose, a Crawford County resident, told the commission she has coordinated with local contact Shasta and researchers to bring storage-battery experts to the county for a site tour and briefing. "Ram Gupta at PSU... is one of the top scientists in the nation as far as storage batteries," Rose said, and she added that a senior chemical engineer at Sandia National Laboratories has agreed to consult.
Rose asked that commissioners and staff schedule a 4:00 p.m. site tour outside school hours so it would not interrupt classes. She said the group is currently considering lithium-iron batteries and that the researchers would discuss safety and risk. "We want to make sure that the batteries that are used are safe," Rose said.
Commissioners acknowledged the invitation and encouraged staff to arrange for the experts to brief the commission and the public. No formal action was taken; commissioners said they wanted the experts to present their findings to the full commission and that the visit would help inform the county's comprehensive plan work on energy infrastructure.
The commission did not set a firm date during the meeting; Rose said she would email details and available dates to county staff.
