Juvenile Justice Center Phase 1 complete; 35 youths moved into new facility, county plans demolition of old building

Jamie Gravatt, supervisor at the Juvenile Detention Center, updated the commission that as of the previous Monday staff safely moved 35 youths into the county’s new Juvenile Justice Center and began shutting down the old facility.
"As of last Monday we moved our youth into the new facility and we're closing down the old facility," Gravatt said, adding that youths are "settling in and enjoying" the new space and that several youths told staff they feel safer in the new building. Gravatt said Phase 1 is "essentially complete," that contractors are resolving a few operational bugs (including toilet-pressure adjustments and a programmable electrical device that has intermittently cut power to day-room outlets), and that demolition of the old building is scheduled to begin next Monday.
Commissioners praised staff for the transition and noted help from IT and other county contractors during the move. The report was informational; no vote was required. The commission later proceeded to other agenda items and an executive session.
