County approves five-year transportation and bridge plan to keep eligibility for BIG grant funds

Jenna Jarrett of the Highway Department explained the county's five-year plan for transportation and bridges, saying the state requires the commission to approve the plan for the county to remain eligible for bridge improvement (BIG) grant funds.
"Every year, there's small changes based on what we think is a higher need sooner than others," Jarrett said, noting that bridges identified by inspectors are added to the plan so the county can apply for grant funding. She said the BIG fund is continually funded, though projects compete harder as costs rise.
Jarrett said staff held a public meeting that drew seven township members and that the plan contains incremental changes rather than wholesale revisions. A commissioner praised the highway department's success in securing funding and moved to approve the plan; the commission passed the motion by roll call.
What happens next: the county will submit the certified five-year transportation and bridge plan to maintain eligibility for state bridge-improvement grants.
