Architect Scott Shamrock said the new courtroom would mirror the other 5th‑floor state courtrooms and meet state requirements for servers and AV systems.
Several commissioners questioned whether an existing first‑floor jury room or other partially finished space could be adapted at lower cost, citing safety windows and electronic infrastructure differences. “For active shooter situations... that 1st Floor courtroom is full of windows,” one speaker said, urging caution about re‑using that room for jury matters.
Supporters cited the immediate operational need: a judge currently lacks a full‑time courtroom and is being moved between rooms. After discussion the commission approved the build‑out and waived the second reading.
The county will fund the project from restricted local capital and staff will proceed with contracting and oversight.
