Lafayette arts board thanks council for grant funding that supports local arts

Lafayette Cultural Arts Board leaders told council that local grant programs have funded hundreds of projects since 2010, directly supporting education, festivals and community cohesion and urged continued council support.
Melissa McGowan, chair of the Lafayette Cultural Arts Board, and fellow board member Brynn Pennington addressed the council during public comment to thank the council for continuing to fund LCAB grants.
McGowan and Pennington described two LCAB programs—Arts & Community grants and Arts in Education grants—and said the board has funded more than 700 projects since 2021. McGowan told council that last year ‘‘between 15 and 18,000 people participated in LCAP grant programming’’ and that local investment in the arts creates long‑term civic and economic benefits.
The speakers urged the council to maintain the city’s funding allocation, saying grant awards create opportunities across ages and backgrounds and ‘‘help ensure that art is accessible for everyone no matter background, age, or experience.’’
Council response: Council acknowledged the board’s outreach materials and thanked LCAB for its work; there was no related council motion or budget vote at the Sept. 2 meeting.
